I have been using Solus on my old chromebook for a year or so, and that is what I went with on my desktop. Everything just worked on my desktop as it had on my chromebook. I installed steam and it worked fine. That is until this morning, the window for a steam update popped up and I clicked "restart steam." Steam restarted and I was presented with "Failed to load steamui.so."

I had run into a similar problem many years ago and it was a huge hassle to get it fixed. I started googling the error and I was not feeling better. Then I added solus to the search and found this reddit post. I hadn't opened the Linux Steam Integration program before because Steam had just worked, but I turned off native runtime as suggested. Steam started up normally loaded the new update and was working as before.

P.S. How awesome is proton? The last time I had Linux as my main OS I had to run two versions of steam, the native linux one and the windows one through cedega. I may never go back to windows again on my personal computer.

There was only one fuck-up but boy howdy was it a doozy. If knowledge is power Wayland's IT department is in desperate need of some fresh double a's.

The sin in question is the fact that David's Weyland account is still active after 10 years of him being missing. They should should have hit his account with a digital brillo pad after a couple of weeks. Instead David just waltzes onto the good ship Covenant, starts ordering the computer around and the ship accepts his commands.

"But muh voice recognition" I hear you saying. The fact that the these mass produced androids can perfectly mimic each other is all the more reason to not use any form of biometric security on your ships. If anything the androids should have the lowest system privileges, opening up the crew's stasis pods and performing experimental surgeries is right out. zeos386sxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948407035904996027noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12099897.post-60435506442263761472017-01-06T11:47:00.001-06:002017-01-06T11:47:52.475-06:00Politicszeos386sxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948407035904996027noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12099897.post-8388239073752451372017-01-02T09:32:00.000-06:002017-01-02T09:32:52.499-06:00Who is Jeff Indeed?

who the hell is jeff pic.twitter.com/UlKVBbBLgw
— Bob Vulfov (@bobvulfov) December 31, 2016

Jeff is a cancer upon the rural route 13 book club. He has been pilfering my ideas and passing them off as his own for years. Up till now I have let him get away with it because of his alleged possession of between one and nine nuclear weapons, but I will not let it go unchallenged if he co-opts my opinions of The Napoleon of Notting Hill, our first book of the new year. I believe my integrity is worth possibly condemning the residents of rural route 13 to a nuclear hellstorm. It's like Buck said in The Call of the Wild, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it." Next week when I look around upon the smoldering remains of my neighbors, I will do it knowing that they died with the certain knowledge that Jeff is an intellectual fraud. zeos386sxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948407035904996027noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12099897.post-81527885952119065672016-09-10T18:36:00.001-05:002016-09-12T18:05:37.851-05:00My 2016 Remington R51

Like many people I have craned my neck to watch the car fire that is the Remington R51. I read the reviews and watched the youtube videos following the initial release. The schadenfreude was strong. All the same I did like to looks of the gun and before the reviews came out I had considered purchasing one. Despite some more shaky reviews of the re-engineered R51, I went and bought one at a gunshow recently. I still like the looks of it and given its ruined reputation I felt like I would at worst have a forgotten oddball in a few years (someday I'll get that Colt New Agent DAO of my dreams). At approximately $400 it was worth the risk.

When I got it home the first thing I did was disassemble it. Let me say this was a chore, I have taken down some odd guns before but it is obvious that this pistol takes its design cues from and gun made in the 1910's. It has gotten easier the more I have done it, but it will never be a Glock or even a 1911. I loaded and unloaded the magazines. While I was manually unloading the magazines the nose of the bullets kept catching on the lip that holds the follower in. I think this is the origin of most of the issues with this pistol. I also dry fired it a few times to get a feel for the trigger. No surprise the oddball pistol has an oddball trigger. It feels fairly light and is very crisp, but there is no discernible reset. If the hammer is down the trigger is all wobbly and squishy. Its not bad its just weird.

One of the things that first attracted me to the pistol was that it was all metal. Steel slide and aluminum frame. The frame is made of a seemingly similar aluminum and finish to what you find in most AR15's. The frame is more prone to nicks and dings that most AR's I have used. I don't know if it is the metal itself or the finish, but as a whole the frame isn't quite as durable as I would expect.

After a week or so of fondling my new pistol I had to go to the range and actually shoot it. I bought a few boxes of different name brand range ammo and one box of primo hollow points and headed out. I won't lie after reading all the reviews and watching all the videos I was a bit pensive; but nothing horrible happened.

On this trip to the range I shot 214 rounds and had only 2 malfunctions. I started with the browning 147gr. Both malfunctions were in the first magazine. The second round didn't fully go into battery and the seventh and final round failed to feed correctly. After that I had 207 rounds with no problems. Again I feel the magazine is the culprit. All I did after that first magazine was slap the magazines to make sure the heads of the cases were completely against the back of the magazines. I shot 50 rounds of 115gr fmj, 100 124gr fmj, 50 147gr fmj, and 14 115gr +p hp. It is too soon to make a definitive statement, but I feel that at least with my pistol the only thing it needs is a good smack on the magazine. This may still preclude the R51 from being a carry gun, but that is a decision each person has to make for themselves.

All in all I feel like I got a good gun and one that I will keep. As far as the reputation goes I think the likes of Glock have set a new bar for reliability that has made persnickety guns no longer acceptable. This is a fairly new thing, I can remember reading gun magazines in the 80's and 90's give glowing reviews to guns that were just as finicky as the R51. Those reviews were not shilling or sources of controversy. It was just accepted that some guns were only reliable with certain brands of ammo, or would only work properly with first party magazines, or etc. 20 or so years ago the people I know wouldn't buy steel case ammo at any price, now everyone does so without a second thought. If this were a wired article I would coin a new term: Glockification, because that's what happened. Guns like Glocks were made such that they could eat any form of ammo. Remington probably should have taken that notion into account when they produced the R51.
All you need is a sd card, keyboard, mouse, and a tv (hdmi or composite). Balderdash. To get the most use out of this alleged cheap computer you must have a usb wireless adapter, because only plebs use the built in wired network card. You will also need a powered usb hub to connect other things. Don't forget a table to place this ball of lies upon, and a chair to hold up your unworldly behind. You will also need clothes to wear, a bed to sleep in, a house to put all this stuff into. Don't forget the geopolitical infrastructure necessary to build and electrify this dastardly device. As you can see this $30 computer can actually cost tens of thousands if not millions of dollars. What a rip off, no other sbc or microcontroller has such onerous requirements.zeos386sxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948407035904996027noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12099897.post-81121547244862632762015-12-29T10:30:00.000-06:002016-01-06T16:42:34.993-06:00Encryption is the new gun controlThe same people who don't know anything about guns, know even less about computers and the internet. If they have to spam you into joining, you don't need them. If I want to see pictures of my niece I can text my brother, I don't have to go to facebook. If I want to talk to my parents I call them with my cellphone telephone. Hell I am this close to busting out a goose feather, a nib, and some parchment. I would rather use any other form of communication than be a steer lead to data collection slaughter.
P.S. Linkedin stop trying to trick me into joining your bullshit website.
I have been messing around with interfacing my raspberry pi with the keyboard and somewhere in the future the lcd. Yesterday I was bored and decided to fool around with the speaker. I found this post and followed it to figure out how to work the speaker. I then found this post that has code to play the mario theme using an arduino. I took his code and melded it with the softone example from wiringpi to make it work on the raspberry pi. I also added some code from okLed.c to get the ACT light to blink in time with the song kind of. The code I ended up with is is below.

I followed the instructions to create my own version and tried to upload it to the online creator; but I kept getting an "unable to validate userid" error. Despite all convention. It turns out that when the online creator page says foo is username and foobar is the password, they mean it literally. This would have been easier to troubleshoot if the forum post entitled "Common mistakes with creator tool" had mentioned that. It helpfully states that the files must be in the root of the zip file and that the bmp files are limited to 256 colors, but nothing about the username and password using the common placeholders of foo and foobar. Only until I did some further searching did I find another thread that enlightened me. In my head scratching I came to understand that this tool was made by non english speakers, but I have also dealt with enough non english speakers to know that foo and foobar are used universally as they are here.zeos386sxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948407035904996027noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12099897.post-16503689749409936592014-01-01T15:03:00.002-06:002014-01-01T15:03:18.232-06:00Life Hack Everyone, We've got a Life Hack here. The wall street fat-cats have your nuts in a vice? Are you tired of choking on a handful of filberts? There is a simple way to make your own mixed nuts at only 5x the cost. That way is to buy the individual nuts you want and mix them yourself. BWAAM, Life Hack. No more picking almonds, or california commie pills as they are known in these parts, out of your nuts. You really can't put a price on getting enough pecans in your hand; other than $12 a pound, that's a price. Most lifehackers wildly exaggerate how inexpensive their idea is; here's a life hack for you: pallets cost money.
The NCAA has, in a move that is characterized by experts as baffling, suspended all players on top 25 football and basketball teams. The NCAA claims the ruling is a proactive reaction to improper benefits that players will receive when they go on to careers as professional athletes. Based on the theory of quantum trickle down economics the NCAA says that a player's athletic ability provides them with the potential to profit that other students do not have access to. The amateur status of student athletes now reinforced the NCAA says it is looking forward to an exciting football season full of dropped passes, fumbles, and low scoring. When asked one rules committee member was unable to correctly describe a football and said they were not really "into" sports; another member replied "green" when asked the color of a basketball.

This is not the only action the NCAA is going to make, they are also consulting with physicist in an effort to sanction programs that do the wrong thing in alternate universes. One unnamed scientist said, "Those people (the NCAA) are crazy, crazy rich." Another said that they are using NCAA funding to complete the scrapped super collider in Texas, "They think I am going to provide a way to keep student athletes from ever making any money in any field ever; but I'm going to provide myself with a nobel prize." When asked for comment about this newest plan the NCAA said that "they would totally get back at those jocks even if it brings about the apocalypse."

In an unrelated note, SEC, PAC 12, Big Ten, and Big XII schools are expected to announce their withdrawal from the NCAA. The organization already has a proposed name the Collegiate Football League, There is some concern over confusion with the Canadian Football league. Canadians however are historically baffled by football's, or summer hockey, lack of sticks and ice and therefore the Canadians are not expected to put up much of a fight. Americans on the other hand do not care what it is called as long as an oblong spheroid is fought over. The schools plan to create a new league where championships are decided by playing games rather than by sports writers have not gone unnoticed by the NCAA who were seen shaking their fists in the air and yelling, "****ing jocks!" Wait what did that last sentence say? Oh hell no I'm not going back to writing reviews of garden fertilizers. Screw the fans, the NCAA knows all and is our beneficent overlord. No you can't take my keyboard from me, I bought it with my own money. I feel that it is a big problem that civilian police forces are becoming militarized. To me if there is a local problem that truly requires military action, they should call up a local militia or national guard. Right now we have swat teams shooting first and then letting their target die to cover their asses. With all that said above is at least one officer that I don't have worry about, give that guy a m249 and I still only have to worry about getting licked to death.zeos386sxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948407035904996027noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12099897.post-16659107209193981222013-02-18T10:57:00.000-06:002014-08-15T10:56:10.393-05:00The Jedi Council were Jackasses

This has been bothering me for over a decade now. There were thousands of jedis and only two siths, but the jedis were seeking someone who would bring "balance" to the force. It should have been obvious what was going to happen when the balancer emerged. Clearly if the force ledger was going to be balanced it would not be in favor of the jedis. If anything the jedis should have been looking for the one who was going to bring balance to the force so they could throw him in the deepest darkest hole in the galaxy or shove a light saber through his face.

Microsoft has been using the same, more or less, user interface concept for the last seventeen years and for about ten of those years the vast majority of Microsoft users have used only the Windows XP version of this concept. When Vista came out in 2007 many customers complained to me that they didn't like vista because "everything" was different. When in fact everything was mostly the same with a different coat of paint.

So we went from this:

To this:

And the impression that the average user got was that "everything" was different. Now Microsoft is working on Windows 8 and a new user interface called Metro, the same interface from Windows Phone 7. Below is a screenshot of Windows 8 from the customer preview released this week.

I would like to know what Microsoft think is going to happen when they unleash their newest operating system on an unsuspecting public. Microsoft has been trying to ween their users off of XP since 2007 and now they really are making a significant change to the user interface. So now they apparently think this is going to convince the people who were freaked out by Vista and 7 to stop using XP? My personal opinion is that Metro is a neat idea which works good on touchscreens, but Metro does not work so great with a mouse and keyboard. Maybe Microsoft is trying to work the New Coke marketing strategy.

At one point they talk about not going back in because he may still be a threat; well excuse the hell out of me but is it not your fucking job to confront threats? If he was still a threat they could have shot him 60 more times and if he wasn't a threat they could have sent in the paramedics.

Is it not horribly ironic that while in Iraq the victim would have been thrown in prison for shooting an Iraqi that said "I've got something for you" yet back home he is shot 60 times and denied medical treatment for allegedly uttering the same thing?

I understand what they did and it was probably legally defensible, but i'm saying it was morally wrong to leave him in there. If it meant putting themselves or the other occupants in danger to finish clearing the house they should have done it. imo it is their job to put their lives in danger to serve the public and they clearly have no problem putting civilian lives in danger.

the shooting isn't what bothers me, I understand mistakes happen, to me its what happened after that bothers me. any amount of time spent not doing what is necessary to get help to that guy, and to me waiting 30 minutes for a robot falls in this category, is morally unjustifiable.zeos386sxhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05948407035904996027noreply@blogger.com0
